One of my favorite childhood treats was visiting a soda fountain, typically located in a local variety store, drugstore, or pharmacy, and enjoying either an ice cream soda or a banana split. The fizzy, creamy ice cream soda has been a favorite since the late 1800s and remains as refreshing today as it was then. Whether you have a traditional soda glass or use a large beverage glass, making one at home using this easy modern version is simple and requires only a few ingredients.
Ingredients:
- 2 scoops of your favorite ice cream (vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry work best)
- 1 bottle of cream soda
- Whipped cream (optional)
- Maraschino cherry (optional)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Glass – Gently place two scoops of ice cream into the glass.
- Pour in the Soda – Slowly add the cream soda over the ice cream. Pouring too quickly can cause excessive foaming, so take your time to get a smooth, fizzy blend.
- Mix Gently – Use a long spoon to stir the soda slightly, helping to blend the ice cream and soda for that perfect flavor balance.
- Top It Off – If desired, add a topping of whipped cream and a maraschino cherry for the perfect finishing touch.
- Enjoy! – Serve immediately with a straw and a spoon to fully enjoy the combination of fizzy soda and creamy ice cream.
Variations:
- Start by adding 1/2 cup of flavored syrup (chocolate, vanilla, or fruit) for a more traditional ice cream soda.
- Experiment with different syrups like raspberry, caramel, or butterscotch.
- Try using root beer instead of cream soda for a classic root beer float.
- For a richer taste, use chocolate milk instead of syrup and club soda.
Making an old-fashioned ice cream soda at home brings a vintage charm to any occasion. Whether you’re reliving childhood memories or discovering this treat for the first time, it’s a simple and delicious way to enjoy a taste of the past.
